Over 21,000 individuals of childbearing age diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD) in Maryland. Substance use is a leading cause of maternal death and has significant impact on the approximately 1,500 infants born to Medicaid beneficiaries with OUD in Maryland per year.*
The Maryland Addiction Consultation Service for Maternal Opioid Misuse (MACS for MOMs) supports maternal health providers in addressing the needs of their pregnant and postpartum patients with substance use disorders (SUD), particularly opioid use disorder (OUD). MACS for MOMs, an expansion of the Maryland Addiction Consultation Service (MACS), is a statewide program that is free to all providers.
Maryland is part of a cohort of awardees funded to implement the Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) model. The model is a multi-pronged approach that focuses on improving care for pregnant and postpartum Medicaid beneficiaries diagnosed with OUD. Funding for MACS for MOMs is provided by Maryland Department of Health and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The program is administered by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
